Public School
The Union County Public School System operates five schools and is the fiscal agent for the Head Start Program and Pre-kindergarten Program. Union County school buildings are some of the most up-to-date in the area. The recently completed middle school will have a new addition for the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year and the Woody Gap School in Suches, GA will begin the school year with a new gymnasium. A Fine Arts Center and Sports Complex are currently under construction and are expected to be completed within the next three years.

With approximately 2,600 students, the school system includes an exceptional staff, an outstanding student body and strong parent involvement. School accreditations include the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Georgia Accrediting Commission, Inc. All of the schools have consistently met the No Child Left Behind AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) goals. Union County High School was the recipient of a Gold Award from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and the Woody Gap High School was named one of the top high schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Nearly 70 percent of the professional staff holds advanced degrees. Union County schools enjoy a strong partnership with businesses and other members of the community.

Continuing education, whether a college education, a technical school degree or simply adding to existing knowledge is important to the residents of the area. North Georgia Technical School-Blairsville campus is located just outside of Blairsville, and Young Harris College is a short drive away. In addition to degree programs, these institutions also offer area residents opportunities for continuing education, seminars and workshops.
